John Guthans - August 2001

John Guthans started taking pictures when he was in the fourth grade. His very first camera
was a Hawkeye Fun Flash camera that he purchased by saving coupons on loose-leaf paper.
Shortly after that, his Aunt gave him a contact printer and he began processing film
and also made contact prints. When he was in High School he got on the yearbook and school
newspaper staffs and was taking and processing most of the pictures that appeared in
their yearbook. During his senior year in high school and college he would photograph
a few weddings during the summer. At one time he was developing most of his film and
also was doing his own color printing. He still used professional labs to do the real
important pictures however.
Guthans states: " I generally like still life because getting the lighting correct
can be very challenging. Sometime ago I took this picture of a church in Lacombe, LA.
This picture was taken after the church had been renovated."
John has a degree in Instrumental Music and has been teaching in St. Tammany Parish since
1980. He is currently Band director at Bonne Ecole Elementary and assistant 5th grade
band director at Little Oak Middle School. He plays the French Horn at First Baptist
Church in Slidell.
