Mike Sullivan became interested and involved in outdoor and nature photography, in 1969, while serving as an officer with the U.S. Army in the orient. His travels have also taken him throughout the U.S. and to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Mike and his wife Marilyn and their three children became Slidell residents in 1984. Following Mike’s retirement as a Supervisor with the U.S. Customs Office of Enforcement in 2000, he joined the Slidell Photography Club. His views on photography follow.

“Before I joined the photography club, I believed I had archived photos from my travels that were worthy of competition. I wished to establish my photographic credibility with those images and see where I stood with respect other photographers.”

“As compared to others in the club, my technology is still in the “Dark ages”. I’ve faithfully stuck with my 1960s generation 35mm Pentax film based equipment. When coupled with the current professional films, its sharper optics and high end results can’t be beat.”

“I always attempt to determine if anything of photographic consequence is within reach of any vacation or other trips I make. And, if possible, I always have my camera.”

“I prefer shooting the backcountry of the Sierra, Rocky and Smoky Mountain ranges and national parks. In winter, I always take a few days away from my ski trips to find the photo rich areas. I’m always looking for “off trail” shots and trying to avoid spending film on anything resembling a tourist shot, postcard, or human. To this end, I think we see enough humanity every day. If, I can capture an image that provokes someone’s emotions with a fresh slice of nature they haven’t experienced, I’ve achieved the satisfaction of my craft.”
