Slidell Photography Club

Robert 'Bob' Gunn

Robert’s interest in Photography began while he was a cub scout, with an old “Kodak Brownie”. In 1965 he purchased a used “Argus C3”, (he still has two) his first 35mm camera, and he has been shooting ever since.

He studied in the colleges and universities of Louisiana and Mississippi, is a graduate of the “New York Institute of Photography” and is still learning and trying new techniques. “Our medium is constantly changing and the only way we will improve at our craft is through study and practice”.*

Robert has twice won the John Geiser Award for excellence in photography, has been named “Photographer of the Year” and is an active “Professional” member of the “National Press Photographers Association”(www.NPPA.org). He is a “shooter” for New Orleans’ daily newspaper the “Times Picayune”, covering every type of assignment from feature art to sports. In addition to his regularly published photographs in the newspaper, his work has been used in advertising literature, newspaper advertisements and magazines in the United States and Europe. He has been commissioned by attorneys and his photographs used as evidence. He has also photographed weddings and Mardi-Gras balls. Although a professional photographer, photography has never been just his job. “Photography is an art form that not only reveals the subject but also reveals the photographer”*. He prefers an artistic approach to all photography, photographing subjects he feels drawn to and personally motivated to portray. “Photographers see the beauty and tragedy that surround us all. Our art is the ability to apply this vision in such a way that others can see these things too”.*

He has photographed in 11 countries, but his favorite area for photography is our own “Smoky Mountains”. “God’s beauty is most evident there and is almost overwhelming”.*

He currently uses “Canon” digital and film cameras, Nikon digital and film and “Mamiya” medium format gear. For the past several years he has also worked in his digital darkroom using a film scanner & archival printer. “The new technology is exciting; it opens doors to artistic expression that were unimaginable just a few years ago”.*

Robert has been a resident of the Slidell area for over 30 years, where he and his wife “Charlie”, also a club member, have reared three sons. “I have enjoyed my association with the Slidell Photography Club, and am grateful for the members who share their knowledge and experience”.*
